Talk of the Town

When making plans for the weekend in the triangle area, most people may have one or two nightspots they frequent. The purpose of this article is to expand your horizons when it comes to club hopping by providing a truly honest review of the clubs and nightspots in the Raleigh/Durham area. Some things you should know about this article before you get started.  You will be reading two reviews, the first will be mine and in most cases I have spoken to club management and made them aware that I was coming. The second will be from “undercover club goers”, these are people who went to the club as well, and will be providing a first-hand account of their experience at the club.  First up….Club TABOO.

First off, let me tell you a few things that Club Taboo isn’t. Club Taboo isn’t your ordinary, small jam packed hot and sweaty club.  This club is huge! But, before we get into all that…let me give you the facts:

Address : 600 Creekside Drive, Raleigh NC 27609

Website : Under construction

Cover: Varies depending on event being held there, the usual range is anywhere between $10-$40

Parking: There is ample parking at this club and valet service is offered on occasion depending on the event

Age limit: 25 and up

Dress Code: Entrance is permitted at the discretion of staff, however athletic wear is typically not allowed.

Drinks: Prices start at $5 for a beer and go up from there

Crowd: Primarily African American but I did see a few other ethnicity in the club

Chances you will be hit on by someone “unfavorable”: About a 30% chance, I did notice some thugs and oochiewallys, but it was a Halloween Masquerade event so I couldn’t tell if they were wearing costumes or not.

When you walk into Club Taboo the first thing you will notice is the size of the club.  It is really one of the biggest clubs I have been to in the Triangle area.  Boasting five bars, 2 dance floors and numerous bathrooms you will definitely not be cramped in this club. The huge VIP area is on the second floor of the club and is replete with plush leather couches and a full bar. Please be advised that the stairs to VIP are quite steep and right in the middle of the club in public view.  I say this because I happened to see one young lady take quite an unfortunate spill down the stairs. Six inch heels + lots of alcohol + steep stairs = not a good look.  Ladies, if you intend on getting drunk in the upstairs VIP area at this club… you should probably stay upstairs or be very, very careful on your way down.  You’ve been warned…  On the first floor is a pretty nice sized dance floor, four other bars and a smoking deck outside. There was a pretty even mix of males and females in the club and DJ Faab was definitely playing a good mix of old school and new school songs to get the crowd moving. If Caribbean music is more your style, then you could easily check out the “living room” (the first room on the right when you enter the club) where DJ Tres kept the crowd going with music with more of an island flare.  Be sure to check out this club on Facebook for more info about the “Build ya Brand” events they will be hosting soon.  These events are sure to bring out some of the area’s most up and coming artists as they are given a chance to take the stage and perform with some of today’s hottest DJ’s. I’m told it’s not too late for new talent to participate, for information you can contact Shannon Poole at 919-771-8875. All in all, I would have to say that this is a nightspot worth visiting again.
*Quick and dirty undercover club goer review*

How were the drinks? – “I had to damn near tell the bartender how to make my long Island Iced tea, and it was still weak. ”

How was the wait at the bar? – “The wait in VIP was ridiculous but downstairs was better since there were so many bars to choose from”

How did you like VIP? – “I didn’t realize that I was in VIP until I asked someone why they had that pink band on their wrist. There was no security or bouncer checking for bands so I was up in VIP chillin, I would have been mad if I had paid for it though and everyone else was up in there too.”

Describe the club in a few words – “Up and coming.  This club could definitely be hot if it’s promoted right.  It’s big, layout is nice, nice crowd, I just didn’t know it even existed until you asked me to come out here.  You don’t hear about it on the radio or anything but now that I know about it I will definitely come back again.”
