Olive oil has long been touted as a healthful food. Rich in unsaturated fats, i.e. good fats, it’s integral to a healthy diet. This simple ingredient is thought to be the reason there are so few deaths from heart disease in the Mediterranean, where olive oil is consumed on average several times a day. But, did you know this liquid gold is as beneficial to the outside of the body as the inside? Olive oil is a potent moisturizer for the hair and skin, and devoid of the chemicals found in manufactured products. Also, when applied topically, and not drizzled raw over a salad, it’s acceptable, and even advisable, to buy the cheapest, biggest bottle you can find. Try the following applications, and enjoy the new, naturally moisturized, glowing you!
Olive Oil Bath-Pour two tablespoons to one quarter cup of olive oil into a warm bath. You can also add a couple drops of lavender oil for fragrance and relaxation. Soak for ten minutes or until pruning occurs.
Facial-Mix two teaspoons of olive oil with one egg white and a teaspoon of honey. Apply to face and rinse after ten minutes. While you wait, you can make homemade mayonnaise with the leftover egg yolk and more olive oil! For a refreshing face wash, add a pinch or two of fine ground oatmeal to the above recipe for exfoliation.
Luscious Hair-After shampooing, run a small handful of olive oil through your locks. Leave in for three minutes. Rinse. This works wonders in curly, dry hair and can replace regular conditioner.
